Thousands of tourists choose NORU Kyoto each year for experiences that go beyond typical sightseeing. From our premium e-bikes to hidden temple routes known only to locals, here are 8 reasons why NORU has become Kyoto's most trusted cycling tour company.
1) 2025 Viator Experiences Award Winner
Winning the 2025 Viator Experiences Award wasn't something we expected when we started NORU, but it validates what we've been working toward: creating cycling tours that show Kyoto's authentic character rather than just hitting tourist checkpoints.
Viator [1], the world's largest travel experience platform, evaluates tour operators worldwide based on customer satisfaction, innovation, and service quality. Being selected for this recognition means our approach meets the highest international standards for tourism experiences.

2) Over 5,000 Customer Reviews Speak for Themselves
The numbers tell a clear story. With more than 5,000 reviews [2] and ratings consistently between 4.8-4.9 out of 5.0 [3] – well above the industry average of 4.3 [3] – our tours have built trust through actual guest experiences rather than marketing promises.
What makes these reviews meaningful is that they come from diverse travelers: solo adventurers, couples, families, and groups from dozens of countries. The consistent praise across different traveler types shows our approach works for various preferences and expectations.

3) Small Groups Mean Personalized Experiences
We cap every tour at 8 people maximum. While competitors run groups of 10-20 cyclists[4], our smaller size creates a fundamentally different experience.
With 8 people, your guide can:
- Answer individual questions about Kyoto's history and culture
- Adjust the pace to the group's energy level
- Make spontaneous stops when something interesting appears
- Provide personalized recommendations for the rest of your trip
This isn't just about comfort – it's about having actual conversations and building understanding rather than following a megaphone through crowded streets.
4) Premium E-Bikes Conquer Kyoto's Challenging Terrain
Kyoto sits in a basin surrounded by mountains, and the eastern Higashiyama district features slopes of 8-12%[5]. Those grades make traditional cycling exhausting, especially when you're trying to cover multiple neighborhoods in one day.
Our premium electric bikes with 50-70km range [6] change the equation completely. The e-assist technology reduces physical effort by 80% on hills while increasing travel speed by 20-25% [7]. This means you can:
- Reach hilltop temples without arriving drenched in sweat
- Cover more ground in less time
- Focus on the scenery instead of your burning legs
- Enjoy the experience regardless of fitness level
Standard bike rentals cost ¥1,500-2,500 per day [8], while our guided tours run ¥12,000-15,000 per person [9]. The difference reflects not just better equipment, but comprehensive service: professional guides, safety gear, insurance, water, snacks, and access to locations most tourists never find.

5) Early Morning Departures Slash Crowds by 70-80%
Starting at 9:00 AM [10] isn't just about beating the heat – it's strategic crowd avoidance. Our morning departures reduce crowd exposure by 70-80% [11], completely transforming how you experience each location.
Picture this: standing in a zen garden in a quiet temple with maybe three other visitors instead of thirty. The morning mist rising off stone pathways. Monks going about their routines. The subtle sounds of temple life without tour group chatter drowning everything out.

6) 60-70% Hidden Spot Coverage vs. Industry's 20-30%
Most bike tours stick to obvious locations because they're easy to find and explain. We've built our routes differently.
Our tours reach hidden spots 60-70% of the time [12] compared to the typical 20-30% coverage by other services. This includes:
- Neighborhood temples where local families worship
- Traditional machiya townhouse districts
- Quiet riverside paths away from main roads
- Artisan workshops and family-run cafes
- Seasonal viewing spots known primarily to Kyoto residents
This focus comes from our guides' deep local knowledge – they're not seasonal workers but long-term Kyoto residents [13] who've spent years exploring these neighborhoods on their own time.
7) Longer Tour Duration Creates Deeper Immersion
Our Secret Kyoto tour runs 3 hours 45 minutes, while our Arashiyama experience covers 4+ hours [2]. Compare that to the industry average of 2-3 hours [14], and you see our philosophy: depth over breadth.
Those extra hours matter because:
Better pacing: No need to rush between stops. You have time to actually absorb each location rather than snap photos and move on.
Cultural context: Guides can share stories, historical background, and local perspectives that bring locations to life instead of just pointing out buildings.
Flexibility: When something captures your interest – an artisan at work, an unexpected festival, a perfect photo opportunity – we can pause without derailing the schedule.
Real breaks: Time to sit, have tea, process what you're seeing, and ask questions rather than being perpetually on the move.
8) Decade-Long Experience Founded by Long-Term Kyoto Residents
NORU was established in 2015 [1] by two long-term Kyoto foreign residents who were avid cyclists. The company is currently owned and run by Ross McLean, a Canadian who has called Kyoto home for nearly two decades[2]. This isn't a fly-by-night operation or seasonal tour service – it's a business built by people who've chosen to make Kyoto their permanent home.
This deep-rooted local connection manifests in several ways:
- Guides with genuine expertise: Reviews consistently mention guides like Michael (former Japanese history and social studies teacher at a local Kyoto high school[2]) who bring academic-level knowledge to their tours
- Insider relationships: NORU has special arrangements with local businesses, like reserved seating at popular restaurants that typically have long lines[2]
- Licensed tour operator status: They're officially licensed, meeting Japan's strict regulatory standards for tour operations[3]
- Evolution from cycling café to premier tours: Originally starting as a hangout for cycling enthusiasts and coffee lovers[1], they've grown into Kyoto's premier cycling tour company
What This Means for You: When you book with NORU, you're getting insights from people who've spent 10-20 years living in and studying Kyoto, not seasonal guides reading from scripts. They know which back alleys lead to hidden temples, when to visit spots to avoid crowds, and have personal relationships with local business owners.
Making Your Decision
Our tours aren't for everyone. If you prefer complete independence and spontaneous wandering, a standard bike rental at ¥1,500-2,500 per day [8] makes perfect sense. But if you want to maximize limited time in Kyoto, avoid tourist crowds, reach places that aren't in guidebooks, and understand the cultural context of what you're seeing – that's exactly what we've built these tours to deliver.
We operate with clear safety standards: participants must be 12+ years old and 145cm+ tall [17]. We offer flexible cancellation up to 24-48 hours in advance [18], recognizing that travel plans change.

Frequently Asked Questions
You don't need to be an athlete – that's the whole point of our premium e-bikes. The electric assist does most of the heavy lifting on Kyoto's hills, reducing your physical effort by about 80%. We've had guests ranging from their 20s to their 70s successfully complete our tours. That said, you should be comfortable riding a bicycle and able to cycle for 3-4 hours with breaks. The e-bikes make hills manageable, but you're still actively cycling rather than sitting on a bus. If you can handle a leisurely bike ride in a flat park, you'll be fine on our tours.
Kyoto weather can be unpredictable, especially during rainy season (June-July). We offer free cancellation up to 24-48 hours before your tour, which gives you flexibility if the forecast looks bad. For light rain, we provide rain gear and continue tours – some of our most memorable experiences happen in misty conditions when temple gardens look particularly atmospheric. For heavy rain or unsafe conditions, we'll contact you to reschedule or offer a full refund. We recommend checking the weather forecast 2-3 days before your tour and reaching out if you have concerns. We'd rather reschedule than have you experience Kyoto in a downpour.
Children 13 and older who meet the 145cm height requirement can ride their own e-bike on our tours. Unfortunately, we don't currently offer child seats, trailers, or tandem options for younger children. This limitation exists because: 1) Our routes cover 15-25km with varied terrain that requires independent cycling ability 2) Small group dynamics work best when all participants can keep similar pace 3) Safety considerations on Kyoto's narrow streets and occasional traffic For families with younger children, we recommend waiting until kids are old enough to ride independently, or considering Kyoto's excellent temple gardens and walking-based activities that are more suitable for all ages.
